When Victoria Beckham snapped herself using a treadmill desk long before anyone else, she seemingly did wonders for the idea of walking while you work.

The unique desks, which retail at between £2,000 to £3,000, let employees stroll miles while distracted by their email inbox and are being hailed as the latest way to combat the sedentary nature of a desk job.

Across the pond in the US, fitness fans are fully embracing the concept, with Hearst editor and star of So Cosmo reality show Joanna Coles posting frequently about her beloved office equipment.

Last year, the high-flying New York-based editor posted a picture of herself on social media walking and working while wearing black heels and a designer dress ahead of Fashion Week in the Big Apple. 

She captioned the image: 'Party in the back of my new @givenchyofficial dress... Prepping for #NYFW #realeditorslife'. 

Another similar post reads: 'Back to school... Trying out new moves and my new @ysl shoes on my treadmill...'

While Posh has thus far posted just one snap of herself on her office treadmill, she was clearly impressed by the experience.

The 43-year-old pop star-turned-designer wrote: 'Every office should have one of these, work out and work at the same time!! Genius!! X vb.' 

Fashion designers and magazines are fast installing the new desks and best-selling authors, often working in their own homes, are also loving them.

British novelist Carys Bray, who penned bestseller A Song for Issey, has spoken of her love for hers, saying she produces her best work 'at a treadmill desk in my lounge.'

British supplier Treadmill Desk Store says sales of the health-focused equipment are thriving - especially with forward-thinking companies who want to increase happiness in the workplace - as more people take them seriously.

John Thurgood, of the company, explains: 'At first some people think the machines are an April Fool's joke or a torture device that involves running. 

'However, as soon as they learn it is a piece of office furniture where you can take a gentle stroll whilst working their view changes.' 

Thurgood says around 50,000 of the machines, which start from around £2,000, have been sold in the US while several hundred are now happily installed in offices and homes in the UK. 

The benefits are obvious, he adds: 'I walk around 140,000 steps per week now and log more steps on desk days than at the weekend! 

'The biggest impact on my health is that I no longer have the lower back ache that seemed to arrive with middle age.'
